Cumberland School Volunteers (CSV)

The Cumberland School Volunteers, Inc. (CSV) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to establish and encourage volunteer programs in all Cumberland Schools.

Its mission is to promote greater utilization of volunteers by educators, to foster communication between schools and the community, and to enhance the lives of students by building self-esteem and improving academic progress.

There are a lot of opportunities available in the schools. Registration forms can be requested from Mary Anne Roll by email at droll1@cox.net.

If your work schedule prevents you from volunteering in school this year, you can support Cumberland School Volunteers through your contribution to the annual United Way Campaign at work. When you specify Cumberland School Volunteers, #6106 on your United Way donor designation form, you especially help sustain important programs like JUST FRIENDS and READING IS FUNDAMENTAL.

Just Friends – More Alike than Different

This 4th grade disability awareness program offers an opportunity for volunteers interested in working in the classroom directly with students. This award winning interactive program helps students understand how people deal with blindness, deafness, physical disabilities, learning differences, and developmental disabilities. The goal is to help the students understand that all people are “more alike than different” and all can be “just friends”.

Volunteers make Just Friends happen!    Our volunteers include parents, grandparents, and community members. Volunteers are trained in teams of two to present 5 different “disabilities” through a variety of hands-on activities. Our goal is to help students understand that in spite of those things that make us appear different to each other, we all are “more alike than different”. If you are available in the morning for 2-3 hours weekly for 9 weeks, we promise that the time you give to this program will be well spent and that you will take as much from the program as the children you work with – and you will have a good time! This program cannot begin without an adequate number of volunteers. Please consider participating at your school this year – bring a friend and create your own Just Friends team! We can accommodate volunteers that can commit to all or part of the program schedule. For more information, please contact Mary Anne Roll at 723-3250 or by email at droll1@cox.net.
